Report after report, malware attack on Mac users are pouring in. Security researchers are of the opinion that Mac will be the main target of IT criminals in the near future. The rise of Apple hardware in the computer market poses threat to the market of Windows PCs. Apple has already become a substitute to Windows PC. Along with the rise of Apple, the chances of Apple being attacked by the IT criminals has also become bigger.
Some believe that malware attack is only a false propaganda spread by Windows security vendors with an aim of capturing the unexplored Mac user market. Had Apple devices have loopholes in their security system, the hackers would have attacked it long before. Malware is exclusively motivated by profit and they will go for it whether it is Windows market or Mac market.
Even though user is the weakest point in the security system due to the direct result of malware infection, so far nobody has lost his data or any bank account compromised. It doesn't mean that Mac users are safe and secure. Of course, Mac users must be aware of the installation of malware. The notion that the Mac users are more secure than the Windows users is a false one.
The propaganda made by the large section of the media, Apple, and the experienced users that we are free from all malware installations is really hindering the precautionary measures advocated by the authorities from reaching the ordinary man.
The belief that Mac is impregnable makes you run any executables and visit any site you wish and will make you a victim of malware attack. Recently malware attacks were made in the name of Mac Defender and the study about the attack made certain things clear. In order to make a successful malware attack, two things are to be done. In the first place a Mac user is to be enticed to download at least a bit of software and secondly he is to enter his admin password.
Since malware operates differently on different platforms, the belief "perfectly secure" becomes an abstract notion. The only computer that is impregnable is the computer that is still in the shipping box and the one that is not used so far.
