As per studies conducted by IDC Apple and Samsung smartphones have comfortably overtaken Nokia mobile phone and BlackBerry sales in the Q2 of 2011. The Korean makers of Samsung with their Galaxy phones that run on the Android operating system saw the greatest leap from being No. 4 in Q1 to No, 2 in Q2. From selling 10.8 million phones in the first quarter, the company boasted of an increase of almost 7 million in Q2.
Apple overtook Nokia by having sold 20.3 million iPhones, showing an increase of about 2 million, though they have not yet crossed Nokia's highest selling record of 28.1 million phones in three months. But this quarter Nokia sales dropped drastically from 24.2 million in the last quarter to 16.7 million. IDC states that it is a matter of when Apple will cross that number not a question of whether it can cross it. Apple saw an increase in its sales after the launch of its newest model of the iPhone 4, and the fact remains that in spite of it, the company is still selling the older version the iPhone 3GS. Samsung seems to be coming up with a new mobile phone every few months.
Nokia does not seem to compete with the iPhones. However they are planning to come up with smartphones software from Microsoft Corp., though the Windows run phones will not be launched till practically the end of 2011.
At the same time the BlackBerry from RIM lost its third place when the sale of these phones saw a drop between the first and second quarters. They too are having the same trouble like Nokia to compete with the touch screen models brought out by Apple. The fifth place holder the Taiwanese HTC Corp. is seeing a better growth in sales and is planning to use Google's Android operating system for their platform.
