Will Nokia Mobile Phones Feature Radars in the Future?

nokia-radar-mobile-phone-concept - Missphones.co.ukImagine mobile phones with RADAR built into them! Well Nokia is up to something and they MIGHT have such handsets launching in the future. However, The mobile phone maker has not yet confirmed anything. They have only mentioned that this venture is still in its prototype stage and that we shouldn't get our hopes up to see Nokia phones with RADAR very soon.

Nokia's research unit at Finland have given a brief demo of what a mobile phone with in-built RADAR can do. The first thing that comes to mind is measuring speed and distance. This device does have these abilities. It can measure how fast an object is moving, the distance and direction. This could be of use to traffic police and may be at sports events.

For general usage, the RADAR gives the mobile handset the ability to understand gestures. Volume can be controlled by raising and lowering the hand, without having to touch the phone at all. Even when the device is covered by something like a fabric, the gestures can still be identified. Hence, gestures can work even if the handheld is in the pocket or in the back-pack.

The video below gives a demo of using a RADAR mobile phone for controlling volume and measuring speed of something that's moving.
