Taser International have developed a software which can be used by parents to monitor each and every activity on their children's mobile phones. Parents can monitor texts, emails and even listen to calls that are received on and sent from their children's phones. The company announced this program, called the Protector, at CES this year.
The Protector must be loaded on the mobile handset that needs to be monitored. Any inbound call or text or email to the children's mobile phones, will be routed to the parent's phone. At this point, parents have the choice of allowing the call, blocking it, listen to it and even record it. Attachments in emails can be viewed from the parent's handhelds as well. The outgoing calls, texts and emails can similarly be monitored too. The Protector also the option of setting a list of favourite numbers. Calls or texts from these numbers will be allowed to reach the children's phones, without the necessity of parental monitoring.
The service is expected to release later on this year and is supposed to be compatible with many smartphones.
How effective will this kind of Parental Control be?
One thing that parents should be aware of is that this program cannot run on the children's mobile phones in an invisible mode. The children will be aware that they are being monitored. Hence this tool can be of good use to block calls or messages coming from potentially dangerous people, like perverts. Such monitoring can also prevent kids from indulging in sexting and other such activities.
However, there are some aspects that parents should give a good thought before they can really go about buying and implementing this monitoring software. When children know that are being monitored all the time when they are on their phones, might bring about a feeling that their parents distrust them. Moreover, children, especially the teenagers, do require some privacy, and such mobile phone monitoring can only create drifts in the relationships.
