Like the Samsung Blue Earth phone, the S5500E Lydford is also blue in colour. Attractively designed with neat curved edges, this phone bears a slider form factor. On the facade, you'll see the 2.2” QWVGA screen along with the circular navigation pad and 4 other keys. The sides, hold the volume control keys and the camera clicker. A 3 Megapixel snapper has been integrated into this device. Slide open the phone and the alpha-numeric keypad becomes visible.

Samsung Reclaim Mobile Phone
August 8, 2009
Being ‘eco-conscious’ is the need of the hour. Many mobile phone makers have taken this into their stride and have made environment friendly phones. However, such handsets don’t really do well in the market due to the stepped down features they offer. But, manufacturers these days are trying to make ‘green phones’ as feature-rich as possible to bring them abreast with the other advanced phones. Samsung Reclaim Mobile Phone is one such gadget, which seems quite forward compared to other eco-friendly mobile handsets seen so far.
Bio-plastic materials have been used in the construction of this phone, of which almost 80% is recyclable. This bio-plastic has been derived from corn. The charger gives a glow, to indicate when the charging is complete. So you can save electricity.
It is a slider phone with a QWERTY keyboard. The LCD screen measures 2.4” diagonally and has a resolution of 320 x 240 pixels. This cell phone allows access to the internet, emailing, access to social networking websites like Facebook, MySpace and others. A 2 Megapixel camera for shooting stills as well as videos is packed too. Memory expansion with microSD cards is also supported. The phone even houses a 3.5mm headphone jack.
The Samsung Reclaim Eco-friendly mobile phone comes in 2 colours – ocean blue and earth green. It will be released in the US on August 16, 2009. Sprint has tied up with Samsung for the sales of this handheld. The mobile phone deal is available for $50 for a 2-year contract. The mobile phone offer also includes instant and mail-in rebates. $2 of this amount will be forwarded to The Nature Conservancy of the US for land conservation activities. Though Samsung have not mentioned a UK release, they do have plans for making more eco-friendly handsets for this market as well as for others.

Sony Ericsson Naite Mobile Phone
June 14, 2009
Sony Ericsson Naite Mobile Phone is the other eco-friendly handset that Sony Ericsson is planning to release soon, apart from the Sony Ericsson C901 GreenHeart Phone. The Naite is a candy-bar phone which is expected to be quite affordable. Like the C901 GreenHeart, this handheld too is a 3.5G phone, which promises good internet connectivity speeds. It also uses less packaging material and recycled plastics for its case, in its efforts toward the global green movement. There is a light sensor integrated into this device too, that adjusts screen lighting accordance with ambient light, to save power. Carbon dioxide emission reduction techniques have also been employed in this gadget.
Unlike GreenHeart C901, which has a 5MP camera, the Naite has only a 2 Megapixel snapper. However, this phone might be less expensive too, compared to the former. There is a similar 2.2" 240 x 320 pixels screen in this cell phone as well. Also, an FM radio and a multimedia player form the entertainment sources in this gadget. A microSD card slot is available for memory extension. Even a web browser and an email client are pre-installed in this phone.
This handheld will flaunt 2 attractive garbs – Black with vapour silver and black with ginger red. You can expect the Sony Ericsson Naite Eco-Friendly Phone in certain markets by the third quarter of this year. The price of this device is still a mystery.
Sony Ericsson C901 GreenHeart Mobile Phone
June 13, 2009
Sony Ericsson C901 GreenHeart Mobile Phone, as the name suggests is an environment friendly phone, which is constructed from recycled plastics. The headset that ships with it is also made from similar plastic. Less paper and package material are used for packing up the device too. Moreover, non-toxic processes are used for painting the handsets. The overall manufacturing process is also supposed to be eco-friendly.
There have been eco-friendly phones launched by other companies previously. Such phones are usually less technology-rich with only essential calling and messaging features. Some of the latest go-green cell phones are Digicel Coral 200 Solar and Commtiva Sola. However, the Sony Ericsson C901 GreenHeart is quite robust compared to these phones. Samsung Blue Earth Phone, which is also technology-fertile, is another exception. Sony Ericsson Naite is as well a new environment friendly phone from the company.
The Sony Ericsson GreenHeart Cybershot phone has a 5 Megapixel camera integrated into it. This camera offers multiple shots capability, smile detection, red eye reduction, auto-focus and a xenon flash. You can view the stills and the videos that you capture, on the 2.2” 240 x 320 pixels scratch-resistant screen of this mobile phone. You can as well transfer them to other phones or your PC via Bluetooth. Moreover, this gadget is 3.5G capable. Hence you can use the web browser and upload your pictures in a jiffy to social networking websites. Or email them too, using the email client of this gizmo.
The in-phone memory of this handheld has a 120MB capacity. It also supports Sony Ericsson's native Memory Stick Micro cards for memory expansion. There is a multimedia player and an FM radio built into this device too. The battery of this phone offers almost 9.5 hours of talk-time and about 430 hours of stand-by time, which is quite impressive as well.
The ocean white coloured Sony Ericsson C901 GreenHeart 5 Megapixel Camera Phone is expected to be available for sale some time soon. Pricing details are not yet available. Mean while Sony Ericsson has been taking steps to encourage consumers to give their old and worn out mobile phones for recycling, rather than disposing them off in the junkyard. Way to go Sony Ericsson!
Digicel Coral 200 Solar
June 9, 2009
Digicel, ZTE and Intivation are making 'hay when the sun is shining'. Their joint venture handset - Digicel Coral 200 Solar Mobile Phone, uses solar energy for charging up. Hence you do not require electricity. This world's first solar powered handheld from Digicel has been manufactured by ZTE using the solar technology from Intivation. This gadget had been showcased at the Mobile World Congress, 2009 held in Barcelona as well.
This cost effective cell phone is expected to be released soon. It has a square 1.5” display with a resolution of 128 x 128 pixels. It operates on dual-band GSM. You can as well store 300 entries in the phone book.
Digicel is a Caribbean and Central American mobile telecommunications operator. ZTE is a Chinese mobile phone manufacturer. Intivation is an Amsterdam based company that specialises in utilising solar energy to power up devices, also increasing their efficiency.
Other environment friendly phones that have been announced are the Samsung Blue Earth and the Commtiva Sola.
Not much of a hifi technology-rich phone, the Digicel Coral 200 Solar Go-Green Phone offers the basic mobile phone features, like calling and messaging. It is not one of those handsets with which you would fall in love at first sight. It is a little bulky, owing to the solar batteries housed in it. Yet, it is a boon for all those people around the world who are not blessed with electricity.
