LG GW990 Mobile Phone Sports an Intel Processor
The age of the smartbooks is here. The Consumer Electronics Show, 2010, saw some ace smartbooks which bridged the gap between smartphones and netbooks. More portable than netbooks and more powerful than smartphones, this new breed of devices seems like it is going to be the next big thing in the mobile technology world. Though smartbooks essentially refer to clamshell devices, there are tablet-like (full touchscreen) devices too, that are filling up the space between netbooks and smartphones. The Dell Mini 5 is a perfect example.

Even LG and Intel have teamed up to make one such device - the LG GW990 Mobile Phone. Though the Intel Moorestown platform and the Intel Moblin Linux OS have been used in this gadget, it is still categorised as a mobile phone.

The LG GW990 touts a large 4.8" touchscreen with a high resolution of 1024 x 480 pixels. The processing speed of the Moorestown processor has not yet been revealed. This platform incorporates an Atom processor core, a memory controller and a graphics processor on a single chip. This is supposed to give this LG mobile phone, netbook-like abilities, while also keeping power consumption low.

A 5MP camera is supposed to be built into this smartphone. A secondory camera is also supposed to be present. The battery life offered is expected to be 4 hours for talk and 300 hours on stand-by. This handset is supposed to be a 3.5G capable device. LG have as well mentioned that the GW990 platform can be upgraded to include 4G ability. However, this would require hardware modifications too.

The handheld was 'demo'ed at CES 2010. It is capable of playing 720p video playback, as seen in the YouTube video below, where it plays the trailer of the latest fiction hit, Avatar. The multi-tasking skills of the device are also shown in the video.

The LG GW990 Smartphone is expected to release in Korea during Q3 of this year. There's no information about a UK release yet. But our fingers are crossed for one, as this device does seem promising.
