The LG Optimus 7 smartphone

The Korean consumer electronics giant LG has a global presence and is all charged up to spew out offers in this Christmas and holiday season. The LG Optimus 7 runs on the Windows Phone 7, the mobile operating system which was launched by Microsoft last month.

The LG Optimus 7 smartphone takes the shape of a slate, with an integrated wide 3.5 TFT capacitive touchscreen which is responsive and touch sensitive. The LG touchscreen-phone measures 122 x 59.8 x 11.5 mm and weighs around 140 grams. The 3.8 inch touch-screen display has a resolution of 800x480 pixel. At the bottom of the screen are 3 buttons. The central button is a raised Windows logo and acts as a start button. There are buttons for the camera and volume too. There's a 3.5mm headphone jack, and a micro-USB socket for charging and sync via cable. Standby button is at the bottom. The LG Optimus 7 is well built and has a metal back-plate covering the bay for the 1500 Ah battery and the SIM card slot. WP7 does not support removable memory, so no slot to hold your microSD memory card can be found as in most smartphones. The internal memory of 16GB is what you have. So if you can manage your memory storage judiciously you can do a lot with this LG mobile phone.

Switch the power on and the screen opens up with tiles in red. The tiles can be scrolled over horizontally or vertically virtually to access various apps and functions. The homepage can be customised. You can make the most of Windows Live and also assign apps and short cuts as you need. Social networking is easy to set-up. Messaging is also made easy. Microsoft has enhanced the browsing experience and has pinch to zoom in support. Hyperlinks are automatically recognised. You Tube works fine on the handset. The touchscreen keyboard is very good and fast to operate.

Handset supported by Windows Phone 7 have been given a minimum spec by Microsoft. So most of the manufacturers' phones are similar in hardware. But LG has put in a camera into this phone and made some minor changes to differentiate the product. Available on the other side is a 5MP autofocus camera offering Intelligent Shot and other filters like Beauty Shot, the Panorama Shot, etc. The Panoramic Shot stitches together five shots as you pan the camera with the help of an on-screen arrow. Video at 24 fps can also be shot. Overall, this camera phone is capable enough to give you decent looking pictures.

The LG Optimus Media runs on Zune. A pre-installed app is the DLNA sharing called Play To. It allows you to play content with another compatible device. This LG smart phone has an augmented reality application - Scan Search, included into its software. The hardware is run by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1GHz chipset. As found in most WP7 smartphones, this phone too comes with GPS, WiFi, an accelerometer and other sensors. It supports 3G and HSDPA. You can also listen to FM stereo radio through Bluetooth. Battery life is pretty good as it can last a whole day. Go in for the Optimus 7 and things can get going.
