An Era of Powerful Smartphones

2008-08-23 06:29:13
A smartphone, as the name suggests is a smart device offering advanced capabilities than a typical mobile phone, often with PC-like functionalities. It runs a complete operating system software. In simple terms, it is a phone with advanced connectivity features. Smartphones are attaining popularity day by day because of their advanced features and PDA functionalities. They facilitate text messaging, emails, web access, personal organiser, voice recognition, built-in camera, and much more. They are usually equipped with some identifiable operating software. The operating systems that smartphones use include Symbian, Windows Mobile, Blackberry and Palm OS. Some smartphones even have navigation software. To give an exact definition to smartphone is quite difficult. Broadly speaking, a phone with sophisticated functions and multiple features can be termed as smartphone. They can be called so on the basis of the things they can do and the way they are built. Basically a smartphone should have a QWERTY keypad, T9 predictive text input, fast network connection, fast processor and a decent web browser.

Earlier, mobile phones were widely using 2G technology which supports high bit rate voice but limited data communications. Then came the era of 3G protocol, which provides high speed data rates. 3G facilitates video conferencing, live streaming, video messaging, audio / video content download, internet browsing and global positioning systems. HSDPA is yet another big leap in technology which gives very high speed download for data. HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Access) is also called “Super 3G”. Today, majority of the smartphones are using this technology. Smartphones support a feature called ‘Direct Push email’, wherein you can receive your emails in your phone as and when they arrive. The messaging feature includes T9 predictive text input, a technology that enables the phone to remember the commonly used words and phrases of the user, which makes text-entry easy and faster. Most of the smartphones have a front facing camera for video conferencing. Business people who are out of their office for long hours and require communicating with their office frequently via email and video conferencing, are the ones who benefit the most with these smartphones.

There are certain things to be considered before buying a smartphone. It should feel good in your hand, that is, you should be able to handle and manoeuvre it with ease. You should be able to personalise it. Above all, you must ensure that it serves your purpose. Smartphones merges mobile phone technology with that of Personal Digital Assistant to give you powerful devices. They provide you with information on your fingertips, flexible working and faster communication and keep you organised.
