A small femtocell device dubbed Access Gateway, has been announced by the mobiles carrier Vodafone. This device that carries the unique distinction of the first femtocell device developed in the UK, can enhance mobile phone reception in the home of a customer.
The device, which will be launched in the UK, along with its service on 1st of July, bolsters the 3G (UMTS, HSPA, HSDPA, etc) phone signals by piggybacking on a landline broadband connection from any internet service provider.
The device that will be availed through a range of packages, depending on the customer's mobile tariff is the first of its kind to be launched in Europe as well. The device can be purchased on a mobile phone deal of 24 months, at a cost of GBP 5 a month. An 18 month contract will be charged GBP 7 per month.
Otherwise, the upfront price of the Access Gateway gadget would be GBP 160 followed by a monthly service fee of GBP 5. Another enticing offer extended by Vodafone is a comprehensive deal for the fresh customers, comprising of a 3G smartphone with 500 texts and 100 minutes free usaget, and Access Gateway gadget itself for GBP 15 a month spanning over 24 months.
Even though critics play down it as a gimmick from Vodafone to boost its coverage in a cheap and artful way, some experts still believe that it can be a perfect solution to the customers in the rural areas.
