Bugs in Android and WebOS Platforms Threaten Smartphone Security

Smartphones Security Flaws On the RisePresently the entire smartphone arena is faced with security threats. MWR InfoSecurity, a firm that supplies services and helps clients identify security risks, has reported flaws in the Android and Palm's WebOS platforms, says a report in ITPro. According to MWR, a specially designed message is sent by hackers to the smartphones, which gains them access to data as well as calls on the devices.

MWR has reportedly brought these issues to the notice of Google and Palm. While Google is said to have fixed these issues with their new mobile operating system version, Android 2.2, Palm is yet to fix them.

Palm said in a statement that they take security very seriously. They also said that there are procedures in place for security researchers to report issues and that the company thoroughly investigates such risks, fixes any vulnerabilities and pushes them to WebOS users over the air.

A spokesperson for Google mentioned that the flaw is not exclusive to Google and that the bug can affect the device only if malicious websites or WiFi networks are accessed. Also, no users have been affected by the bug till date.

However, Alex Fidgen, director, MWR, said, "We don't think mobile phone companies are really ready to deal with security issues."

Perhaps the mobile phone manufacturers need to dedicate some resources to develop tight security for their smartphones as well.
