Many would have purchased 'iPhone 4' during the year. As 'iPhone5' is expected now, it will mean disposing off the iPhone 4 for many customers, unless a backup is arranged, which by itself is a costly affair.
Obviously iPhone 4 will head to 'used gadget market'. It can be sold to a retailer dealing in 'used hardware'. Alternately it can be put up for sale on websites like eBay or Craigslist. Whatever it may be, the longer you wait, the lesser you will get for the item. So the question is whether it is reasonable to sell it off now or wait for the arrival of iPhone 5.
From experience it is learnt that if you make the sale before the announcement of the price of the latest phone, you will lose only 10 to 15 percent of the original price. But if you wait for the arrival of iPhone 5 and then sell means you will lose not less than 25% of the original cost.
So a quick action will save considerable saving. But that will mean going on without a phone for sometime. The reason for the price-drop is because as the new phone arrives there will be a mad rush of users interested in disposing off the old phones which will stack in the market resulting in low cost for the item.
