Canalys - specialists in analysis of tech-and-market-data, recently named Android the leader in the US market for smartphones shipped in Q2, despite Nokia having sold the most number of Symbian smartphones.
These are the percentage shares of mobile phones shipped in this quarter, in the US market:-
Nokia - 38%
Android - 34%
RIM - 32.1%
Apple - 21.7%
According to Canalys, Android had a growth rate of 886% compared to last year. There are plenty of smartphone makers adopting this Google platform. Google CEO, Eric Schmidt pointed out that 200,000 Android mobile phones are being activated on a daily basis.
Nokia was however quick to point out that the number of Symbian phones being sold per day amounts to 300,000 according to Canalys' research; indirectly establishing that they are the leaders in the smartphone market.
However, the Canalys report states that, "Nokia's market dominance is not as unassailable as it once was, with its performance outpaced by growth in the smartphone market as a whole."
While Nokia has been around for a long time now, Android is just a couple of years old in the industry. And hence the latter deserves credit for its phenomenal growth rate. Therefore Canalys is justified when it says that Android is the leader in the smartphone market.
