The auction of the latest mobile spectrum licences that has resulted from the switching of analogue television to digital television, is expected to boost the reception of mobile phone signals as well as the mobile broadband download speeds across the United Kingdom.

The telecommunications regulator of the United Kingdom, Ofcom that is launching there consulation on the auction of the 2.6 GHz and 800 MHz radio specturms in early 2012, said that the licensees purchasing the spectrum are required to agree on the extension of their coverage to 95 per cent of the British population.

Meanwhile, the auction of the 4G mobile spectrum or the fourth generation (Long Term Evoution) spectrum would be equivalent to three fourths of the currently engaged mobile spectrum.

The watchdog wanted to see better uniformity of coverage for the cutting edge 4G mobile services throughout the United Kingdom. It insisted that the entities owning the new spectrum would have to cover a proportion of the rural area population of the country.

Meanwhile, Michael Moore the MP for Borders has welcomed this stance of the regulator. He said that the inadequacy of mobile and broadband coverage in Borders was a constent annoyance for both bussinesses and the people as he has been campaigning on such issues for multiple years.
