The Symbian code is available for download and modification from Symbian Developer site. Developers all over the world can create their own applications for integration with the platform. The Symbian platform is supposed to be the largest proprietary code to have been made open sourced. The current code is 25 million lines long! Addition of developer code can increase this number to 38 million lines!

In 2008, Nokia had bought the software, and all Nokia smartphones feature this platform. Even other mobile phone makers have adopted the OS in their smartphones. There are supposed to be almost 330 million smartphones in the market that are based on the Symbian platform.

Executive director of the Symbian Foundation, Lee Williams told The Times that Google's Android is a young and naive system. He also mentioned that despite the headlines saying that everyone is moving to Android, [Symbian] is not shrinking.
