Marko Ahtisaari, Nokia's design in charge, informed that the company has plans for its Windows Phone handset with Near Field Communication (NFC) technology to connect with external accessories. He also wants to introduce smartphones with the facility of wireless charging.
It is a clear indication that with the help of NFC technology, the future phones will be connector free devices.
Wireless charging for mobile phone is not something new. It was there for 'Palm Pre' smartphone unveiled in June 2009. Somehow, it did not pick up.
Ahtisaari is not in favour of any connectors for the phone. NFC will do well to eliminate User Interface operations like pairing accessories.
At present Windows Phones does not offer NFC. Andy Lees, formerly of Microsoft, had stated in October 2011, that NFC will be introduced in 2012 enabling the manufacturers to vary hardware on the mobile operating system.
Even now Nokia makes use of NFC technology for speaker, headset pairing, gaming etc. That means, it will not be surprising if Lumia handsets come with NFC.
Incidentally, Ahtisaari informed 'The Guardian' that hereafter the Lumia phones will be without the flip-up plastic tab covering the micro-USB port. He said that Nokia is interested in making the handset look beautiful, but not at the expense of performance. In fact, the Finnish company will do everything for the improvement of the handset.
