
The telecommunications regulator of the United Kingdom, Ofcom has while proposing texting the authority (police) from a mobile device in an emergency adviced them to forget dialing the 999 emergency number.
Ofcom has suggested that a person should be able to text from his mobile device, the emergency services. This suggestion from the regulator comes just months prior to fresh regulations of the European Union coming into effect. The new regulation decree that emergency service axis for disabled citizens need to be as close to the services delivered to other uses as allowed by the existing technology.
A similar pilot project called Emergency SMS has been already running in the United Kingdom for the past tweleve months. This scheme predomiantly allows speech imparied and deaf people to communicate with the police and similar emergency services by simply texting 999.
The manager for business development at Mobile Choices UK, Simon Piper said that he fully supported a complete deployment of Emergency SMS that has already proven its worth in helping those who found using the telephone a demanding task.
Although the regulator has not commited to a formal deployment of Emergency SMS, the trial project has already contributed to the saving of a woman's life, when she collapsed at work. Later she reportedly delivered a couple of babies.
