Apple has plans of opening sales of the
iPhone 3G to T-Mobile and Orange in the UK, by September this year, says a report in Mobile Today. The iPhone maker intends to promote the sales of the phone by this move. Moreover, Apple's contract with O2 for iPhone exclusivity ends in September 2009. However, the latest
iPhone 3G S mobile phone will still continue to be available only with O2.
This piece of news might be difficult for O2 to digest. Their prices and tariffs are under direct threat from what the rival network operators might offer. The Mobile Today report also states that many people in the UK have refrained from buying the iPhone considering its price. This has resulted in the importing of SIM-free unlocked iPhones from other countries for using with other operators. Sources at 3, have confirmed that there have been thousands of such unlocked iPhones using their network.
Orange and T-Mobile already sell the iPhone in other parts of the world. There have been reports earlier about
T-Mobile having talks with Apple for stocking their
mobile phones. Some reports even mentioned that
T-Mobile has plans of buying contract free iPhones from Europe for selling in the UK. The wireless network operator now seems pretty confident that they will receive a positive response from the iPhone maker. T Mobile call centres have already started telling their customers that the iPhone will soon be running on their network.
