Top recyclers to check handsets before recycling
Virgin Media, Mazuma and Carphone Warehouse, the mobile recyclers, in order to stop stolen handset entering the recycling chain, has signed up a new code of practice. This code of practice intends to create a minimum standard procedure for checking mobile phones that are stolen and what next to do if they are identified.
Recyclers signing up the code of conduct, to ensure the mobile phones are not stolen, is expected to check all the handsets against various databases that may also include national mobile phone registry. According to Recipero, a company that furnished information to national mobile phone registry, not less than 100,000 handsets that are reported stolen are recycled every year.
Whenever a stolen handset is identified, the recyclers will have to report either to police or the concern network or an insurance firm. James Brokenshire, Crime prevention minister exclaims that the most impressive work happened on blocking stolen phones is that the mobile phone theft is made a less productive crime.
