World's first mobile phone with a 12 megapixel camera has been officially announced by Samsung, and will be called Samsung Pixon 12 Mobile Phone. As a matter of fact, Samsung had previously in the beginning of the year 2009, thrown hints of unveiling a 12 mega pixel camera phone at the MWC in Barcelona. Many people had discarded the rumour as a hoax subsequently, since the company did not show up with anything of the kind amidst the event.
This announcement from Samsung is believed to act as a shocker to somone like Sony Ericsson, as they too had announced their plans to launch a 12mega pixel camera phone - Sony Ericsson Satio 12MP Camera Mobile Phone. Sony Ericsson will be deeply disturbed as the Satio had been looked upon by them as their saviour from the financial dire straits they are sailing through at present. Moreover, Satio has been projected as a potential iPhone killer with a touchscreen-free Hollywood movie package, apart from the big time snapper.
Meanwhile, Pixon 12 that packs a sensational sensor, which makes most compact digital cameras look like the Polaroids of the 80s, also features a comprehensive touchscreen interface that places it in direct competition with the Apple iPhone. The Pixon 12 will also pack a dedicated button for the snapper, apart from many other niceties such as auto focus, quick image saving, scene modes, integrated flash and shake control. However, another significant addition in the Pixon 12, a 3.1 inch AMOLED display is ironically one aspect that gives a breather to the Satio camp.
This is because, Satio itself has to struggle hard with its 12MP sensor to keep its price tag par with the iPhone's, an important aspect that has kept the iPhone floating even through the economic meltdown. In the context, Pixon with a heavy AMOLED touchscreen, apart from its 12MP sensor is more likely to find it hard to keep its price offer at least in the vicinity of the costs of its rivals. To add to the pricing woes, Pixon would also coming with a 28mm wide angle lens.
Apart from the above facts, if Samsung is planning to launch Pixon 12 touted as a smartphone finally, it would also have to battle it out with the new iPhone OS 3.0 interface of its rival, leave aside the innumerable applications. However, Pixon 12 is obvious to glean a good amount of votes for its high-end as well as advanced features, even if does not fare better as a potential iPhone killer.
