Symbian OS development hereafter with Nokia

Nokia will be taking control of Symbian platform development hereafter. The strategic step was taken by the Symbian Foundation. The foundation will look after licensing software, the Symbian trademark and protecting other intellectual property. As Mr. Tim Halbrow, Executive Director, Symbian Foundation, pointed out, since the setting up of the foundation, there has been seismic changes in the mobile market and the general economy. According to him the changes will take place in April of 2011.

The Symbian Foundation will reduces its operations and cut staff strength and will work with remaining licenses. Nokia will remain committed to the Symbian platform as it is now the most used platform in the world by numerous best mobile phones. Nokia will focus on Qt and Qt Quick. It will be developed for both Symbian and the MeeGo platform. So what works in Qt for Symbian will also work on Nokia MeeGo devices in the future.

The company will invest its own resources to develop the Symbian platform, practically in-house. But Nokia will be obligated to the roadmap and shipping commitments. They will deliver ongoing support and innovation benefiting the Symbian open source ecosystem in future. This platform powers hundreds of millions of smartphones all over the world. Long live the Symbian!
