For more than seven years mobile phone use while driving has been illegal in the United Kingdom. Today it appears that even under the threat of a penalty and points on the driver's licence it has still not been a deterrent.

The relevant research has been carried out by Good Mobile Phones UK a mobile phone comparison website based in the United Kingdom. The research which was open to the respondent posted a question to them, "Did they use their mobile phone at the time of driving without the use of a hands-free device?" To this question, 81 per cent said yes.

1,859 drivers aged more than or equal to 17 were polled by the study. A range of questions of multiple choices on what the respondents used their mobile phone for while driving, were passed on to the respondents, for which the most popular choice was for making calls. 52 per cent admitted that they used their phone to make calls while driving.

A further 44 per cent of respondents admitted that they were taken to texting while driving and 31 per cent said that they used their phone to check emails while on the road.
