Smartphones are the most rapidly advancing gadgets today. Technology is bridging the gap between the capabilities of computers and mobile phones. The present-day smartphone can do almost everything that a computer or laptop does. However, there are restrictions due to its smaller size. Now, Texas Instruments and Qualcomm, 2 leading chip makers, are said to be developing dual core processors for smartphones, for enhancing performance.
Till date smartphones shipped with single core processors. By implementing dual cored processors in them, processing speed and performance can be catapulted high. A dual core processor is equivalent to 2 processors. Each core can handle tasks simultaneously. Thus, enabling more demanding tasks, like playing HD (maybe even 1080p) content, video calling, intensive games/apps and the like, to be handled with ease. Even the multi-tasking abilities of smartphones can be enhanced with 2-cored processors.
According to experts processing speed can be enhanced by increasing the clock speed of the processor. However, this can lead to generation of excess heat and extensive hogging-up of battery. TI and Qualcomm are said to be working on new technologies which will enable dual core processors to be more power efficient, so that battery life will not have to be sacrificed for better performance.
While the dual-core chip from TI is named OMAP4430, the one from Qualcomm is called QSD8672. They are expected to be available some time later this year. Devices with these chips should start shipping early next year.
