Apple have finally decided to support Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) on the Apple iPhone, which allows people to make calls using the intenet. A few days back, Apple released the new beta v 3.2 of their iPhone SDK to include VoIP compatibility on 3G networks.

Initially, Apple's policy blocked telephony over the internet. However, with software from third party companies like iCall, Fring and Acrobits, VoIP can be had on the Apple iPhone. These applications can be downloaded on to the mobile phones for establishing VoIP calls. Initially, these services could be used only at WiFi hotspots. However, they can now be used on the go as well.

Not just Apple, but also the mobile network operators involved, have to support the service, in-order to accomplish VoIP calls. In October last year, AT&T, which is the carrier for the Apple iPhone in the US had mentioned that they would be supporting VoIP on their network. Now, iPhone consumers can save plenty on their voice call bills.

In the UK, Orange, who is one of the many providers, stocking the iPhone told Wired that they had never blocked any third party software for offering such services. However, they also added that they are unable to guarantee the call quality and customer service with such services. It still remains to be confirmed if the other mobile network operators in the UK will allow using VoIP on their networks.

Currently, there has been no official confirmation that the Apple iPad will support VoIP. However, it is said to include a microphone and will also be compatible with iPhone apps. Hence, guesses are that the Apple iPad should also support VoIP.
