Wi-Fi exchange for mobile operators from DT and iPass
The wholesale division of Deutsche Telekom and iPass the hotspot aggregator have partnered to offer the mobile operators, the ability to off load the data traffic of their customers onto Wi-Fi more conveniently.

Wi-Fi Mobilise Services exchange unveiled on Monday will be using the open mobile platform of iPass for billing, reporting and authentication. This system will serve as a market place, where operators will be able to rake in money from the domestic Wi-Fi networks of their own, while also benefiting from the international hotspot network of iPass.

While the network of iPass offers more than 518,000 Wi-Fi hotspots across the world, the international carrier sales and solutions whole scale agreements of Deutsche Telekom provides the operators that cannot be managed alone by the aggregator.

According to Evan Kaplan, the chief of iPass the mobile network operators were increasingly feeling the sting of heavy consumption of data on their networks, and were eager to switch there customers to Wi-Fi networks where possible.

Deutsche Telekom, incidently has been the carrier, which was most visionary regarding the role of wireless broadband in the telecommunications infrastructure said Kaplan. It was, according to him more or less always cheaper to provide Wi-Fi, because 3G and 4G data networks were burdened by a massive amount of overhead.
