Due to the growing demand in downloading content from the internet, by smartphone users, especially the iPhone users, many of the network operators are experiencing huge traffic on their lines. Thus, there are reports that the number of WiFi hotspots in the UK are to be increased inorder to meet this growing demand.

Currently, there are about 10,000 WiFi hotspots in the UK. This is expected to treble in the next 2 years. So in 2012, you can expect 30,000 WiFi hotspots in the UK.

Globally too, the WiFi usage is said to have flared up by 47% in the previous year.

Many of the mobile network operators are even experiencing huge traffic on their lines, due to tremendous amount of downloads done with smartphones, like the iPhone. We had recently heard of O2 problems in the UK. Hence, these network providers are said to be encouraging their customers to use WiFi more than their 3G networks.
